Tower Cottage - Beschreibung des Objektes
Tower Cottage was formerly part of Buckland Abbey, a Cistercian abbey owned to-day by the National Trust, but it is now a building in a privately owned mediaeval courtyard in the grounds of the Abbey. It is in a wonderfully atmospheric and peaceful situation in the Tavy valley, surrounded by sixteen acres of private gardens and fields which are in turn surrounded by National Trust land. Visitors are welcome to enjoy the beautiful garden of the Cider House, which is open occasionally under the National Gardens Scheme.
Accommodation consists of a comfortable sitting-room, kitchen and dining-room, and a hallway with stairs up to three bedrooms (double, twin, and single) and bathroom. There is a Jetmaster open fire in the sitting-room and storage heating in all rooms. There are duvets and spare blankets for the beds. Bed linen can be provided for an extra charge of ten pounds per person.
An area of the Walled Garden has been set aside for the use of tenants, with a patio, garden seats, lawns and flowers, and a seat in the wall where, it is said, the monks used to sit and meditate, or perhaps rest from their labours. The rest of the walled garden grows organic fruit and vegetables, and flowers for cutting, and there is usually plenty to spare for visitors. There is also a hard tennis court which people are welcome to play on at any time (please bring tennis shoes - not trainers), and a stream through the fields which has a fascination for children.
The magnificent scenery of South-West Dartmoor offers walking, golf, fishing and riding, and there are National Trust walks through the surrounding countryside which can be joined from near the cottage. Being so near to the Cornish border, we are well placed for visiting a large number of NT houses and famous gardens in both Devon and Cornwall.
The market town of Tavistock is eight miles away; the weekly craft and antique market is fun for collectors, but most necessities can be found in Yelverton, three miles away, including meat, fish, fruit and veg. and a Post Office. The village P.O. at Crapstone (1 mile) has excellent bread. There are good local pubs in both Milton Combe (Who’d a Thought It) and Buckland Monachorum (The Drake Manor), both less than a mile away.
Facilities: Colour TV. Phone. Duvets and blankets provided for all beds. Electricity and central heating at cost from meter readings. Washing machine. Dishwasher. Microwave oven.
