Your Hosts - Phil and Lucie Mims
What did you do before buying this Inn?
Phil spent 17 years in a wholesale jewelry business, and 14 years in relationship marketing with Excel Communications. Lucie helped raise 3 sons and 1 daughter, while staying booked as a top hairstylist in Dallas. She sure is prepared to greet guests, and prepare fabulous meals, with all that experience!
What motivated you to buy an Inn?
We were just ready for change in life. Our careers had prepared us for this new venture, as serving others comes naturally to us both. Having lived in the Mountains from '93-'97, we missed that fresh mountain air, and unsurpassed scenery.
Why Ouray, and why the Damn Yankee?
Ouray is known as Little Switzerland of America , and once you've been here, you'll quickly understand why. You'll want not to leave, and even may book your next trip in before you leave. This area is the most beautiful in all of North America, what ever season you choose to visit. The attitude of the locals here is different, and more slow-paced. It's said that folks here live on Rocky Mountain time. Everyone lives more outdoors, and comes in only to sleep (sometimes). This slow pace, and fun way to live is contagious, and even if you can't reside here, you may manage to take a little of it back home with you. Ouray offers so much to do, summer, winter or fall, including world class skiing nearby in Telluride, jeeping high elevation trails, hiking, biking, fishing, fall foliage viewing, or just sitting in the Hot Springs, while snow falls on your head. Pine-scented mountain air is unbeatable. You'll see!
As for the Yankee...the place has been very popular for years, with repeat guests. The rooms are the largest in Ouray, and after our redecorating, some of the nicest. The highlight of the Yankee is the 3rd floor observatory (possibly the highest in Ouray), where you can see from windows on 3 sides the majestic mountain tops. This observatory view for the fireworks on New Years Eve and the 4th of July is the best! Mother deer and her fawns walk daily thru the side yard, without fear. Leave your fear home too. Come have fun!
How long will you serve guests here yourselves?
As long as we feel good, and still enjoy it. We meet some of the most fascinating folks, from all walks of life, and from many countries. Even our guests come back to see who is here this time. Life is more than a destination, you know. It's the Journey that really counts, and here at the Yankee, we intend to add to life's journey of others, and to the collection of fine memories for our guests.
What's the worst part for people coming to Ouray and the Yankee?
For sure, having to leave after your stay. Thinking about going back to life's daily routine, with traffic and all, can almost depress a guest! They sure can't get this pampering back home. Time warp" may be a good description. At least they will feel good about the value we provide here at the Damn Yankee Inn.
