Casas do Palheiro Velho -The amenities of old times, in the Algarve of today...



In the municipality of Castro Marim, just a few kilometres from the beaches of Baía de Monte Gordo, on the verge of the marshes bordering the right bank of Guadiana River and Reserva Natural do Sapal de Castro Marim and Vila Real de Santo Antonio, and surrounded by the ridges of Baixo Guadiana, Casas do Palheiro Velho roughly 53 km distant from Faro, and consisting of a borderland are approximately at the same distance from Huelva.



An old farmer's house of the Algarve, resulting from a careful process of rehabilitation, in which primacy was given to the use of techniques and traditional building materials gave rise to five distinct areas, which were given names of local herbs (Mariolas, Alfazema, Tomilho, Rosmaninho e Alecrim), each of them, with its own characteristics, however, they are all framed in an organic architecture, emblematic of this mountain region. Two of the spaces are suite type, and the remaining are rooms. They all are equipped with TV, air conditioning and private toilet.


Casas do Pallheiro Velho welcomes guests and offers a large reception room. A large outdoor yard with excellent panoramic view is equipped with barbecue. Private parking is free.



The rustic decoration and the warm hues and soft, characteristics of bright days of “Baixo Guadiana” convey peace and serenity, allowing a pleasant feeling of stillness and well-being.



This is an environmentally friendly initiative, making use of thermodynamics to solar and water heating, and proceeds to domestic water recycling. After being under a process of purification, water is used to feed toilets and washing machines, cleaning of the soil and irrigation. The dark waters are also treated using a notch filter, from this; the effluents are poured into a basin of evapo-transpiration, where treatment is carried out using halophyte plants and riparian shrubs (Wastewater Treatment Plant). Later they are drained to a pit where water is collected to irrigate a garden area.



Nearby you can spend free time in different ways, from horse riding, donkey rides, mountain biking, paintballing, canoeing, nature reserve walks, fishing or bathing in dams, to discovering the trails of Baixo Guadiana, or playing golf at six clubs spread over fifteen kilometres.
