Porto Frailis - Arbatax, this is the best well known town of the Ogliastra area, thanks partly to the presence of the commercial and tourist port and thanks also to its rather intriguing name: it derives from an Arabic word meaning 'fourteenth tower', for the Saracen tower which overlooks the seafront. Arbatax was born as a village of fishermen, many of whom came from the nearby island of Ponza, and it is from fishing that it earned its biggest fortunes, thanks to the significant variety of fish and crustaceans in the area.
Porto Frailis is placed on the headland of Bellavista, and is surrounded by a natural scenery of bays and inlets which make it completely unique and fascinating.
Starting from the Rocce Rosse (Red Rocks), famous throughout the world for their particular colour of porphyry, then the splendid Cala Moresca, on the eastern side of the town, and continuing towards the Telis, the Bay of Portofrailis and San Gemiliano - now residential areas built up using some interesting architecture - it is possible to admire different colours and landscapes, all both striking and enchanting is a small harbour in the Ogliastra region.
The centre of this small town rises at the bottom of Cape Bellavista - territory enriched with the green-coloured Mediterranean scrub and famous for the characteristic red rocks and the masses of porphyritic granite located close to the harbour. A true explosion of colours takes place in the spring with the contrast of the rocks of the headland and reef, the beach's white sand and the limpid waters.
A natural frame to this is the panorama of the surrounding mountains, the highest on the island.
Beside the harbour rises a tower from the seventeenth-century while to the right is a prophyry quarry. On the sea, the silhouette of the famous porphyritic reef known as 'red rocks' from Arbatax. In addition, there is a passageway dug into the rock through which access to a small beach at the feet of the rocky walcan be had. Off in the distance, on a point in the southern part of the headland and 3 km away, is the S. Gemiliano Tower. All of this together with the ample choice of excursions in the inland areas make Arbatax a particularly pleasant seaside area and place to stay.
Sardinia's underwater world is just as diverse and varied as its island scenery. Every year diving fans are lured to Sardinia by its striking coastlines, translucent water, abundant sunshine, sunken Roman galleys, rugged rocks and rare shells.
Almost a hundred ship wrecks lie deep under the waters of Villasimius. Not far away is the marine reservation of Capo Carbonara, which stretches from Capo Boi to the island of Serpentara. Despite being a popular diving destination, especially in the summer months, Sardinia's underwater world remains biologically sound. Divers and snorklers are wonderstruck by the gigantic cowries and multitude of fish, turtles and dolphins to be found here.
Old ships' vestiges lay scattered on the ocean floor of the Capo Spartivento, off the untouched Baia Chia in Sardinia's South West. A little bit further out you can marvel at the swarming fish on two shallow reefs. Not much further away is Cala Cipolla, seven granite rock reefs habituated by colourful coral polyps and molluscs at a depth of 25 metres. In the North-West of the island around Capo Caccia, an underwater labyrinth of caves and tunnels with bizarre stalactites and colourful corals, awaits your exploration.
Diving expeditions to the Archipels of La Maddalena National Park are organised from Capriccioli on the Costa Smeralda. This nature protected area is rampant with reefs and with a seaweed covered sandy sea bed at only 10 metres in depth, is perfect for beginners and snorklers. There are countless other dive sites around Sardinia and many coastal resorts have competent dive centres where you can do a course, rent equipment and take guided tours.
Sardinia is a beautiful and fascinating island; this portal strives to catalogue its numerous tourist attractions. It is a wonderful and captivating island for those whose visit is motivated by its medieval churches, extraordinary scenery and nuraghe; for those with a passion for hunting, fishing, hiking, or horseback-riding; for individuals interested in visiting its Phoenician, Punic and Roman historical testimonials or satisfying their curiosity on subjects concerning geology, nature and mineralogy, and finally, for those who are interested in its genuine folklore and celebrations, its many beaches and transparent coastlines, sudden gorges and hidden grottoes. Lastly, let's not forpost its marshes and their typical fauna or pleasure boating along its coastline from which one of the most scenic and remarkable views of the Mediterranean is offered.
