Arezzo is a small walled town, a testimony to the Middle Ages just as much as its great cities. Castles, fortress, towers, town walls appear everywhere ;some are well preserved, others are in ruins, but the main remnants are not the tourist routes. Arezzo stands 296, above sea level on a hilly slope near a wide plateau on which open the Valdarno , Casentino and Valdichiana valleys.
Of Etruscan origin, it was an important Roman Municipium in the Imperial period ;between the 9th and 11th centuries ir was governed by the Bishop "“ Counts: this was a period of greatest splendour.
Old rivalry with Siena and Florence , Arezzo have in the old town centre monuments from 12th century.
