Private holiday villas and vacation rentals in Palermo Palermo is the capital of Sicily, as well as the homonymous province. 659,443 inhabitants live in it and, if we take into account the surrounding municipalities, more than one million citizens.

The city's symbol is a golden eagle with spread wings in flight on a red background, which holds in its talons the written SPQP "Senatus PopulusQue Panormitanus". It saw a clear reference to the Senate (remember the Senatus Romanorum "SPQR"), it seems to date back to Roman times; although it not missed those who have assumed the emergence in the twelfth century by permission of King William I of Sicilia.Stemm of Palermo

The territory adjacent to the one where stands the present city, and precisely the one closest to the mountains, turns out to be inhabited since prehistoric times: to remember are, in fact, the prehistoric cave on Monte Pellegrino that were throughout the Paleolithic and Mesolithic human habitation. In fact, they have been carved into the rock cave in and they were found important archaeological finds including tools for hunting and bones, as well as a number of interesting carvings in the walls depicting scenes of everyday life, people and animals.

The original name of the city was of Phoenician type "Zyz" whose phonetic pronunciation was stamped sweet and made with sound "sys", while the meaning indicated the "flower", perhaps for the morphology of the territory, delimited Papireto and Kemonia rivers, takes the form of a flower.

The current name derives, however, Panormo (from the greek pān-Ormos "all-port"). Thanks to the natural conformation of the territory lapped by the two rivers, Palermo shape, in fact, a natural amphitheater deputy since ancient times to trade. Not only soprarichiamati Phoenicians, but also traders from Greece, Cyprus and Crete crowded city. In this way he entered the expansionist aims of Syracuse and Carthage, until the arrival of the Roman Empire, under whose rule changed the name slightly, latinizzandolo: "Panormus".
