Private holiday villas and vacation rentals in Costa de la Luz - Huelva This coast (Costa de la Luz), little exploited by Spanish and international tourism, is luminous and mild, having in average more than 3000 hours/year of sun, more than 185 days/year for swimming, the air temperature is 19 C over the year and 26 C in summer.

Any kind of water sports are available and two marinas (Ayamonte and Isla Cristina (www.puertosdeandalucia.com/), two casinos and several golf courses (Isla Canela, Isla Antilla) (www.golf-andalucia.net/index.htm; www.andalucia-golf.com) are within 0-10 km from Isla Cristina. Our villa is within a safe and lonely residential area with about 10-15 family houses surrounded by a clean and fine beach and a beatiful landscape of pine and eucalyptus trees forests with plenty of birds, some rabbits and chameleons (the only ones in Spain and maybe in Europe).
This site is 1 km far from Isla Cristina, a town built on a sandy peninsula and one of the most important fishing manufacturing sites in Southern Spain, 15000 inhabitants, with excellent infrastructure, within the Spanish province of Huelva, in the Southwest Spain being at the border with South of Portugal.

See www.terra.es/personal/xilcar/ for information in Spanish about Isla Cristina. At West of Isla Cristina 1) The town of Ayamonte (10 km West from Isla Cristina) is worth to visit, to have a coffee or a lunch or dinner at the Parador de Turismo with beatiful views on the town, the river Guadiana (the border between Spain and Portugal) and the towns of Castro Marin and Vila Real de San Atonio in Portugal.

You can see the Parador in the top of a hill on the left side of the higway when you drive towards Portugal and just before the international bridge on the river Guadiana. At this point, you can leave the highway following Ayamonte indications, then follow indications to Parador.

Afterwards, visit the old, white and top part of the town (close to Parador) and then going dowhill visit downtown Ayamonte, where some nice streets, squares, restaurants, bars (good tapas), etc will appear.2) The town of Vila Real de San Antonio (the second town at the Portuguese side of the river Guadiana after crossing the international bridge) is a British old fashioned town, very active from commercial point of view.

A lot of Spaniards arrive every day by ferry crossing the river or by car for buying different items, mainly clothes, jewels, craftsmanship, etc. 3) Following the highway to the West in Portugal and after about 90 km driving, it is the town of Lagos, very interesting for visiting, old, hystorical, very typical and with a lot of very nice shops and antiques.

At 1-2 km West from Lagos there is a beatiful site named Punta Piedade with impressive clifs, views, a lighthouse and very nice small beaches (Don Camilo, Ana). Don Camilo is our favourite beach (however there are so many stairs!). At Punta Piedade it is possible to take a boat for visiting the rocks and clifs from the sea.In the way back home, 4) you can take the road going from the town of Portimao to the North arriving to the town of Monchique on the top of a mountain, it is very typical and worth to visit.

You will find very nice views, streets, shops with artisans, etc. Not far from Monchique you will find the hystorical city of Silves, the capital of a Mussulman kingdom around Xth century.5) Albufeira is a touristic big town with beatiful beaches, for instance San Rafael (another favourite beach) at 3-4 km West from town, where in summer (and maybe in spring) it is possible to have lunch or tapas at a restaurant on the beach.6) The city of Faro, the capital of the Algarve and with a very active airport in spring and summer with a lot of charter flights arriving every day from UK, Germany, Netherlands, etc.7) The town of Tavira is very nice to visit, it is a hystorical and quiet site, very typical. At East of Isla Cristina1) Isla Antilla is a tourist resort with several big hotels, a lot of apartments, restaurants, nice shops, cinemas, golf yard, a lot of people around, etc. Its atmosphere, more sophisticated, expensive and cosmopolitan, is quite different from Isla Cristina, a quiet and more natural town.2)

At about 20-35 km East, there are the beaches and towns of El Rompido, El Portil and Punta Umbria on a road going from the town of Cartaya to the coast in the sense of Punta Umbria and Huelva (very nice road with great views).3) From Punta Umbria and by higwway and crossing a long bridge you will arrive to the city of Huelva (150000 citizens) with shopping centers (Corte Inglés, Carrefour, etc), hospitals, etc and a lot of chemical factories. Nothing special and polluted.4) At about 5 km SouthEast from the city of Huelva is the monastery of La Rabida and the town of Palos, the site where La Santa Maria, La Pinta y La Niña, the three ships of Colon were made and where he began his trip to discover America at 1492.5) Following to the East from La Rábida along the coast, you will pass through Mazagon and finally will arrive to the resort and beach of Matalascañas. Close to this site is the National Park of Doñana (see www.andalucia.com/environment/protect/donana.htm).

It is a very impressive and exciting tour in big LandRovers (80 km) for several hours visiting very long and lonely beaches and forest with plently of birds around, deers, wild boars, flamingos, etc It is convenient to book in advance the visit and tour (80 km for 4-5 hours) at the telephone numbers (34)959430432 and (34)959430451 (they speak English). It is a great tour for birds watching, wild life, etc.6) The world famous and wonderful city of Sevilla, capital of Andalucia, with more than 500000 inhabitants (at 120 km by tol-free highway, about 1 h from Isla Cristina), is also worth to visit in a one day tour (see www.sol.com). Over there is essential to visit Los Reales Alcázares (the Mussulman Kings Palace), the cathedral with the famous tower La Giralda, the tower Torre del Oro (where the gold coming from America was stored in the past), the Maria Luisa park, España Square, at 3 milles from Sevilla (in the town of Santiponce) the Roman ruins of Italica (Italica was the Roman capital of Andalucia with more than 500.000 inhabitants!)7)

Another exciting one day tour could be going to the North and visiting the beatiful mountains and hills of Sierra de Huelva where you will find typical and white Andalusian towns (Aracena, Jabugo, Riotinto, Valverde del Camino, Zalamea la Real.) and villages (Aguafria, Campofrio.). In Aracena is worth to visit the caves and castle, in Riotinto the landscape is like being in Mars after thousands of year of mining activities (phoenicians, tartesians, romans.) up to now, Jabugo and other towns around are famous in Spain for the quality of the Iberian ham and sausages.8) It is also worth to visit the Mussulman castle of Niebla (http://www.castillodeniebla.com/mapa.htm) on the A-49 higway in between Huelva and Sevilla.
