Tortoli is the perfect base from which to explore pretty much all of sardinia as it is approximately two to three hours by car from cagliari airport in the south east, olbia in the north east and alghero in the north west. it has easy access by boat to some of the most exclusive and secluded beaches in sardinia and it is just a two hour drive to the breathtaking Costa Smeralda.
The mainly flat territory is situated in a vast plain facing the sea.. Tortolì is one of the most renowned villages on the eastern coast, rich in citrus groves, characterised by the unique beauty of its coasts with plenty of peculiar reefs of red porphyry and white beaches, such as Lido di Orrì and Porto Frailis which definitely stand out for the whiteness of their sand and the limpidity of their waters.
From the Steeple of Pedra Longa in Cove Sisine for the old paths of the coalmen - One of the most beautiful 'tall streets' of the Mediterranean, so it is defined by Mario Verin that with Peppino Cicalò has discovered of it and divulged the layout, and really the beauty of the environments that crosses, the views of the coast that it continually proposes, the perfume of the Mediterranean stain and its complexity, make some Selvaggio Blu something special.
'The beginning of the true destruction of the great forests of Sardinia has been one of the as laws emanated by the Italian government in 1863 with which the cut of 200.000 hectares of wood of tall stem allowed him, particularly lecci and proper roverelle for the construction of the new fitted with iron streets. This way the cut is continued for fifty years almost devouring 600.000 hectares of wood. Kilometers and kilometers of arid calcareous that belong by now to the landscape 'characteristic' of Sardinia.'
Today, Tortolì is the most important centre in the entire Ogliastra region. Its economy, once based on agriculture, today concentrates on the service industry, thanks to the presence of the Arbatax harbour and to the new airport.
Of them all, the tourism sector has grown the most, transforming the area into a sought-after tourist destination.
In the city centre, you ll find the ex-cathedral, the church of St. Andrew, that dates back to the XVIII Century and is in Baroque style. Also very interesting is the interior of the church, including three aisles where it s possible to admire numerous works of art and a big, marble altar.
The seaside is quite famous for its 'red rocks'. Equally famous is the 'Blues' festival that takes place every summer at the beach.
The area also offers the Spanish Tower and the Tower of San Gemiliano, built in the XVI Century by the Spanish as a defence against frequent piratical raids.
To be noted is the San Salvatore park where you ll admire a nuragic village, a tomba dei giganti (giants cave) and some menhir dating back to a period between the XVIII and the XIX Centuries B.C.
The whole area of Ogliastra includes fine white sand beaches, crystal-clear waters, cliffs which fall sheer to the sea, age-old woods and dry desert plains. Sailing along the wonderful coast it possible to admire some of the most beautiful bays of the Mediterranean: Cala Gonone, Cala Luna, Cala Goloritzè are nowadays very well-know destinations for tourism.
As a matter of fact the whole Orosei gulf has been appointed by the EU as SIC (Site of Communitarian Importance), awards given to sites characterised by the presence of important species of flora and fauna.
One of the most famous and popular site is the Grotta del Bue Marino (Sea cow s cave), once shelter for the seals, today in danger of extinction.
The species of animals are numerous and include vultures, predatory birds, moufflons and wild boars, mostly in the internal area.
Arbatax is a small village quite close to the sea, with a nice port. Its name reminds to the Sarancens raids, quite frequent in the past. Today Arbatax is an important tourist destination thanks to its beaches and its typical seafood.
Tortoli and Santa Maria Navarrese are two other important tourist sites. In particular, Santa Maria Navarrese shows an interesting church, dated back to the XI century. The legend tells that the Navarra Princess, victim of a shipwrecked coming back from the Holy Land, made contact with this land saving herself from death and ordered to build the church as sign of thanks.
From the archaeological point of view, to be noted is the "holy area of Sa Perdalonga', near Barisardo. The area includes one of the most important menhir of Sardinia, surrounded by rocks from where it was used to attend the ceremonies. Another important monument is the church of San Antonio in Orosei. The first structure is dated back around the XIII century and the tower near the church itself seems to confirm that date. The interior of church kept ancient frescoes, recently rehandled.
Ogliastra is unique. For everything. Its personality has remained authentic. It is a land of great traditions and the cradle of an ancient culture. A culture which comes from contact with the land and the sea, which for centuries has been a determining element in the life of Sardinia.
Its sandy coasts and crystal-clear sea are perfect for unforgettable and eventful vacations. Cities and places such as Cagliari, Alghero, the Costa Smeralda (Emerald Coast) and Olbia are the ideal places for the worldly tourist.
Ogliastra's main mountainous massifs are suitable for excursions and trekking. The Gennargentu stands out among them with its highest summit (1834 m). The archaeology-enthused tourist can visit the characteristic Nuraghe (for example: Su Nuraxi in Barumini) and the Domus de Janas found all over the island.
Great traditions, unaltered over the centuries and handed down also through gastronomy, are characterised by tasty Sardinian cheeses (sheep's milk cheese) and strong wines (Cannonau, Monica, Vermentino and Nuragus), which contain the flavour of an ancient land, thus completing the picture of a sincere and hospitable island. In this section you will find a substantial list of possible itineraries thought of especially to satisfy the needs of the most demanding tourist looking for alternative ways to the traditional destinations of Sardinian tourism.
