Uzumlu village is 500m above sea level set in a fertile plain surrounded by an imposing mountain range. The beauty of the village has attracted a few foreigners, but Uzumlu remains a working village relying on agriculture and traditional crafts. The village’s name translates as ‘with grapes’ and vines producing a variety of grapes abound. Fields of cotton, sesame, aniseed, wheat, barley and summer vegetables surround the village while on the mountain slopes apples, pomegranates, almonds, pears and olives are grown. Every Friday there is a thriving local market for fruit, vegetables and other goods.
The heart of the village is a square bordered by home-produce shops, a barber, a post office (with money change), an Internet café, a mosque as well as the inevitable tea-houses. Wandering around the small lanes that fan out from the square you can see women weaving cotton and lace on traditional pedal looms in front of their houses.
There are a number of restaurants and a wine bar in the village offering local wines and a variety of good food. There are three other restaurants within a short drive and the village itself is less than 2km from the villas. There is a regular Dolmus minibus service running to Calis Beach and Fethiye from the central square.
The Roman/Lycian city of Cadianda is behind and above the village at 900m and is reached by a dirt road in a 15 minute drive from the village and the site is well worth a visit for the fascinating archaeology.
Fethiye is 17km from both vacation villas and you can either use the Dolmus minibuses or it’s an easy 25 minute drive to a bustling port with lots to offer. By the harbour you can walk along the promenade past the tour boats or relax in the many bars and tea-houses. In the Old Town (Paspatur) there are many shops offering quality leather goods, carpets and designer clothes and the Turkish bath (Haman) is a must!
There are many good restaurants and an excellent food market with meat and fish at very low prices and also three major supermarkets as well as the famous Fethiye Tuesday Market. Fethiye is steeped in history and near the harbour you can see Lycian Tombs cut out of the mountainside above a Roman amphitheatre.
Calis Beach is an easy 20 minute drive from the holiday villas with a 5km shingle beach, many bars, restaurants, a go-kart track and a water park. Olu Deniz, lively Hisaronu and Kaya Koy ghost village are all a short distance from Fethiye. You must see the many para-gliders at Olu Deniz and also visit the Blue Lagoon with its secluded sandy beaches.
Hisaronu has many night clubs, restaurants and tourist shops and Kaya Koy is a ghost village that was deserted after the population exchanges – read Birds Without Wings by Louis De Bernieres. Patara Beach is one hour away with a 20km sandy beach, many Lycian tombs and recently excavated Roman ruins and slightly further on is picturesque Kalkan town. In the other direction, towards Dalaman, is Gocek which is a lovely village with a large marina and on the way visit the isolated beach at Katranci.
