The green train is a tourist service that allows the nature-loving tourist to visit suggestive and uncontaminated areas in the central part of the island. Not only is there the chance to witness enchanting panoramas but also to taste a little bit of history by travelling in a steam or diesel locomotive. It works from 15th June to 15th September, more or less, because it is only a summer service or it is possible to book wagons for one day in other periods.
Leaving from Arbatax, railway station by the sea, we travel through the territories of Girasole, Villagrande, Elini, Arzana, Ilbono and Lanusei; the Gennargentu mountain chain appears majestically , its peaks reflected in the Flumendosa lake, the highest in Sardinia. The scenery is breathtaking, “La Perda Liana” rocky limestone outcrop introduces us to the territories of Gairo, Ussassai, Ulassai and Seui, where the landscape changes yet again. After about 60 km the train stops and we continue on foot to the natural oasis of Montarbu where an expert guide leads us around the park. Then we have a typical Sardinian lunch in the shade of century-old evergreen oaks: culurgionis (fresh handmade ravioli), marracconeddus sciarrancaus (local gnocchi), delicious roast meats, all washed down with an excellent Cannonau wine. In the afternoon we take a pleasant walk to the rocky limestone buttes nearby
Its history: The line on which the train runs was the fruit of a project by Cavour and was subsequently made executive by the Depretis act in 1879, which financed the installation of small trains to be used in the political-economic development of the iron and wood industries. Following this, the transport was used to connect the coastline to the centre of the island to aid the economic growth of the inner zones of the island (Mandas, Sorgono Sadali, etc.). From the mid-nineties the “Green train of Sardinia" project was born to use this type of locomotion (at this point in time rendered obsolete) for tourism.

Niala (a visit to the park of Montarbu and the chalkstone 'heels')

Underlined by the characteristic chalkstone 'heels' of Ogliastra, Niala is to be found on the edges of the natural oasis of Montarbu, one of the most famous points in Gennargentu, natural habitat of the mouflon and the eagle: through woods of holm-oak and ilex, glades of juniper and arbute, along the river and its torrents, by foot you can follow easy or more difficult paths and the effort will be more than amply rewarded by the wonder of the territory, so diverse from area to area.
