The Golgo tableland is a more or less level, vast extension located approximately 400 metres above sea level that is bordered by dolomitic ridges and crossed by streams and waterways and narrow gorges (passes) that lead to the sea (an example is Codula di Sisine), which give rise to numerous small beaches of incomparable beauty and unique in the world.
The tableland can be reached by taking main road no. 125 to the small town of Baunei. Once in town – almost in front of the parish church – there is an intersection from which a road to the small church of St. Peter of Golgo leads to. Following along this road, which is quite sloped, you arrive at another intersection after about 5 kilometres. Continue straight ahead for approximately 2 kilometres until you catch sight of a deviation to the right; proceeding on, you immediately notice the small sixteenth-century church of St. Pete: a small construction that rises from a site once dedicated to pagan religions and fenced off and closed in by an outside stone wall. Continuing along the ancient “via majore" (main road) with its Roman paving remains, you arrive at the so-called “piscinas": natural hollows used to collect rain-water both for processing metal as well as for the cults of the souls of the original inhabitants.
Not far from here, we find the famous Su Sterru pothole formed in Jurassic limestone; its mouth is located in a hollow partially covered by basaltic lava from the Plio-Pleistocene period (giving rise to the name “old crater"). Its depth of 270 meters makes it the deepest pothole with a single opening in all of Europe. The horizontal section is more or less elliptical and has a diameter of 25 meters in the central section and 40 in the room at its base.
Inside it lives unique troglobia fauna (for example the Sardinian Geotritone, a amphibian that has progressively adapted itself to a cave environment, Trichoniscus-type terrestrial crustaceans and the Porrohomma spider). At one time in this site, a brutal ritual of killing elderly people took place.
Just before the church of St. Peter, we find an intersection to the right that leads to a limestone gorge called Codula di Sisine, surrounded by very old holm-oak forests and very high rocky sides. Continuing along the road, you arrive at the magnificent Cala di Sisine - one of the most beautiful and fascinating beaches on the Gulf of Orosei.
In the vicinity of Golgo, we find a fairly smooth path (whose entrance is located close to an attended car park) that can only be walked along on foot. After about four kilometres in descent (find out what the difference in level and kilometres are), you will have a breathtaking view over Cala di Goloritzè - a small beach, which is unmistakable for the presence of the homonymous stone arch as well as for its sea, which has been made crystal-clear by the extremely white, small limestone stones.
