The Barn-Church Court Cottages

Description of vacation home

Set in beautiful rolling countryside between the spectacular Lakeland Fells and the majestic North Pennines lies the unspoilt picturesque village of Gamblesby. Church Court Cottages are situated around a private courtyard directly opposite St John's church.
The Barn sleeps four people in two bedrooms (one double, one twin) and has a large open-plan living area upstairs with views over the surrounding North Pennines hills.
The upstairs area has an original vaulted and beamed ceiling and is a great space for relaxing on it's two comfortable sofas for reading, playing a game, watching a DVD or your favourite programme on the TV. A wood-burning stove adds to the cosy comfort of The Barn.
The well equipped kitchen has a good range of appliances including a dishwasher, microwave, electric oven with hob and fridge/freezer. All cutlery, crockery and utensils are provided. The dining table is extendable in case extra guests stay for a meal, and a highchair is available for our younger visitors.
Downstairs, you will find the two bedrooms (a double and a twin) along with the fully tiled shower room.
A washing machine and tumble dryer are located under the stairs.
The pretty double bedroom with a beamed ceiling and furnished in pine has a comfortable double bed, along with a spacious wardrobe and chest of drawers providing plenty of storage and hanging space. The window looks out over the rear garden and Fells.
The twin bedroom also has a beamed ceiling and similar views over the rear garden with its abundance of birdlife and the family hens that provide freshly laid eggs for visitors !
The shower room is fully tiled and has a walk in shower, and was recently refurbished with a new sink and toilet.
Outside, the paved courtyard provides ample seating with it's two picnic benches and lawn area from which to take in the surroundings and enjoy the tranquility of this peaceful village. A parking space is allocated for each cottage.

Gamblesby is a truly rural hideaway, just 10 miles north east of Penrith and junction 40 of the M6. It takes about 30 minutes to drive to the beautiful lake Ullswater and 45 minutes to Keswick. For those interested in the world heritage site of Hadrian's Wall (and who wouldn't be?) we are within a pleasant hour's drive of some of the best forts and visitor centres. Perhaps less well known, but definitely worth a visit, is the city of Carlisle with its beautiful sandstone cathedral, castle which imprisoned Mary Queen of Scots, and interesting shops and architecture - all just 40 minutes away. A trip to the border Scottish town of Gretna is only 50 minutes. But there is no need to travel further afield as there is so much to enjoy in our own lovely Eden Valley, named after the gently winding River Eden which flows from close to North Yorkshire all the way to the Solway Firth. Along its banks you will find some memorable walks, sculpture and good fly fishing. In particular Lacey’s Caves just 5 miles from us provides the focus for a fantastic walk for all age groups. The Eden Valley is largely undiscovered by tourists making your walks and drives more relaxed, and shops, tea-shops and visitor attractions more welcoming. Our own village of Gamblesby is a fine example of a medieval fortified village and it has been made a Conservation Area to reflect this. It is built of lovely red sandstone, giving the village, and indeed the whole area, a solid, warm and welcoming air. The farms and houses cluster round the village green harking back to the days of the 'border reivers' when robbers came down from the troubled border lands between Cumberland and Scotland to steal cattle and goods - when the reivers were in sight all the animals were herded from the nearby fields into the village green where they could be protected! Other villages along our Fellside are well worth visitng, including Melmerby and Dufton.

We are situated in the peaceful village of Gamblesby, nestled under Hartside Fell and surrounded by amazing scenery and wildlife. Once you discover our little sanctuary, you won't want to leave ! We are in a fantastic location for many varied pursuits. Within a 5 mile radius, there are at least 5 country pubs that do great food and are mostly dog-friendly. There are many local walks for strolling or serious hiking and great scenery for the avid photographer. Birds and Wildlife are in abundance - we even have our own friendly hedgehog that visits nightly !...not to mention the deer, badgers, hares, rabbits, red squirrels, weasels, owls, raptors and numerous local small birds, as well as our village sheep. We are also a popular area for cyclists. Our village is a quiet peaceful village away from main roads, but close enough to have the advantage of being able to easily reach main routes, tourist attractions and of course the Lake District, Hadrian's Wall, Carlisle and Scotland !

Guests are welcome to arrive after 4pm on their check in date. Because we are in a rural location, a car is advised if possible. However, we do have guests that travel by public transport, and we are happy to pick up visitors from the nearest railway station in Langwathby or the main station in Penrith. We recommend checking out the local bus schedule before arriving, as the bus service to the village is limited. We also have a few local taxi services that will collect and drop off in the village too.
